Wright and Nichols won on the Gold Coast
With waves pumping for two days, South Stradbroke Island was the best event of the WSL countdown
Mikey Wright and Isabella Nichols were the champions of the best event held to date in the countdown that the WSL is doing towards the return of competitions after the stoppage caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Boost Mobile Pro Gold Coast concluded after two days of barreling and powerful walls at the beach break at South Stradbroke Island.
Combining good barrels with maneuvers in the crit, Wright beat Liam O'Brien in the grand final by 15,83 to 9,4. In the semis he had defeated Wade Carmichael and in the quarterfinals Connor O'Leary. For his part, O'Brien beat the event's standout, Jack Robinson, in the semis.
Among the ladies there were all surprises, the two finalists were non-CT members: Isabella Nichols beat Sophie McCulloch and the one who went the furthest of the CT ladies was Nikki Van Dijk.
A series of legends were made and paradoxically the champion was the free surfer Brendan Margierson, who left behind Dean Morrison, Kieren Perrow and Mark Occhilupo.
The Australian Grand Slam now remains to be completed with a stage in Western Australia.
