Albee Layer struggled during his last big wave session on this barreling ride at his home in Maui.

He says he looked for people to go into the water with but no one was available and he had to try.

He ended up going on the water with his girlfriend, Annie Reickhart as a jet ski driver and safety officer.

The reality was that Albee was cautious, he counted the series, they all came with three waves and it was in the third. But this ended up happening.

This is how he related it:

“I had to try yesterday. I couldn’t find anyone to come with me (they were elsewhere earning money), but Annie Reickhart was there to look after me.

I went for the third wave of the series because there hadn't been more than three waves until this one, obviously. Annie was there ready to pick me up but I waved her to protect the ski and figured the fourth wave had to be the last. In retrospect it wasn't my best guess.

After two more waves she was there again, but so close to the cliff and I saw a wave closing in at the worst spot so I waved her away again (bad me again). She was then able to come back and take me.

Just as we got back outside, more waves came and I don't know if I could have handled another set on the rocks. I ended up vomiting some salt water for a while in the channel, with pain in my neck and other places, but I'm okay.

Very grateful that we only lost a board and a hat. Thankful to Annie, you are a great ski driver.”
