Ale Fuenzalida: “I had been waiting for a swell of this magnitude for a long time”
It started (the season) very well, swell after swell and more are on the way, the main focus is on the big waves," he says.
Chilean Alejandro Fuenzalida left for Hawaii right in the middle of a series of big swells that were hitting the islands; he arrived just as the Eddie was about to start in an epic sea.
For most people, the ideal way to go to the islands is to climb a ladder to acclimatize the body and relax from the journey. But Alejandro is well accustomed to the big seas, in fact he loves them and he went headlong into the water.
As he himself says: “I had been waiting for a swell of this magnitude for a long time.” The man was eager to get out on the water and surf those bonbons.
And that's what he did.
Since Eddie was in the water, he went from Waimea to one of the outer huts and when he was gone he went to Waimea.
The result is told in the interview and can be seen in the photos.
The good news for Ale is that this has just begun because the waves are going to keep coming. Right now another XL series is coming.
The trip started with your longest board staying in Chile, what happened?
The swell was historic and I wanted to bring my longest board for the bomb, but at the airport, due to regulations for this specific plane, they wouldn't let me take it because of the size (10 feet). Something that had never happened to me before, so it was very unexpected and it was the last thing I imagined could happen when starting the mission. Luckily, I had my 9'6 which was also over the centimeter mark, but I cried at the letter and they let me take it (laughs).
The good news was that for someone who likes big waves, you arrived just in time for one of the best big swells in recent years. What was it like to arrive and go straight into that huge sea?
Wow! It was amazing! A little tiring but I had been waiting for a swell of this magnitude for a long time. I went straight to pack my things and go to sleep.
The next morning I left for Waimea very early in the morning. The sound of the sea was strong and the energy was powerful, many people were waiting for Eddie Aikau and the waves were really huge, I will remember it forever.
You didn't have your longest board, which one did you go with?
I went with the 9'6 that I use in Punta when it's not so big. The good thing is that it has a lot of meat, which makes up for what it lacks in size. The sea was for a longer board; in fact I was with the shortest board of all the surfers, but I grabbed some very large ones, I was very motivated.
What did you choose to surf?
Waimea because it's my favorite and then I went to an outer reef whose name cannot be revealed (laughs)
Where did you surf the best ones?
I caught the best ones in the outer, because the peak of the swell started from midday onwards, it was mutant.
Who did you see in the water that caught your attention?
There were a couple of underground chargers in the outer that were going head first.
Have you seen any Latino or Hispanic American that caught your attention?
There was Merello (from Chile) and Santi Giovannini (Uruguay); we were 3 Latinos in the outer.
How do you see the North Shore compared to other years?
I feel that there are more and more people and the level is very high. There is an infinite variety of waves, in the end Hawaii is for all levels. Each surfer enjoys it as he wants and looks for his opportunity in different ways in the different waves.
How is your season going?
It started off very well, swell after swell and more are on the way, the main focus is on the big waves, continuing to train and enjoying my season.
