Another sad WSL farce

Further and further away from sport, closer and closer to the show

The double classification rule itself was always absurd, surfing is the only sport on the planet in which you can compete in B and A at the same time. And not only that, but those who come from A compete in B with privileges over the rest of the competitors.

And, with the exception of this year, they are required to compete in at least one B event in their region.

This meant that there were always double qualifiers, that is, surfers who through A qualified for the following year's CT (placing themselves in the top 22) and through B qualified as well (placing themselves in the top 12).

When this happened, the positions in the QS were lowered, if there were two double qualifiers, then they would qualify up to 14th in the QS.

Now the WSL has decided that the spots of the two-time qualifiers will become their property; that is, they will allocate the new spots generated by the athletic life and the WSL's own rules that determine which surfers from the A can compete in the B at their discretion.

In other words: The surfer who is ranked 13th, who with sweat and tears reaches that position, with sporting merit, if he has a double ranked below him, will not necessarily qualify for the CT because the WSL may consider that it will award, with this new rule, the wildcard to another person.

It's ridiculous, it's sad, it's unsportsmanlike, it's unfair, and so on.

In the same season in which a final is announced that could kill the title already won by Medina and Moore, in the same season in which a reality show generates wildcards in CT events (which reaches the top of the elite through a reality show), in the same season a rule that was fair for the scenario proposed by the organization itself is arbitrarily removed.

This is another step that moves the WSL away from sport and closer, not even to the show, as it sought with the finals or with the reality show, but to clowning.

Hopefully the surfers who are signing the petition will get the justice they deserve.

It is a shame to see the path that the institution that was once the most respected and most important surfing institution in the world is taking.
