Blind Teahupoo
Brazilian Derek Rabelo got a tube in one of the heaviest waves in the world
Blind Brazilian surfer Derek Rabelo shocked the world again by going down Teahupoo and landing a barrel (see photo).
Rabelo had already surfed Pipe and now he added the Tahitian beast to his list of waves.
“Believing in yourself is one of the most powerful virtues you can have. Surfing Teahupoo was a dream, but as a blind surfer it meant a great challenge that I was willing to overcome. Challenges make us stronger and you will never fail if you keep trying. Faith over fear,” wrote Rabelo.
Rabelo is from Espirito Santo, he is 27 years old and went blind when he was one, due to glaucoma.
In addition to having surfed Pipe and now Teahupoo, he has shared sessions with Kelly Slater and several other of the best surfers in the world.
There is a book published about him, Beyond These Eyes.
