Courtney Conlogue won in France
She won her second CT of the season and despite missing four tournaments due to injury, she moved closer to the top 5. 17-year-old wildcard Macy Callaghan was the surprise of the event and placed second.
Californian Courtney Conlogue won the Roxy Pro, the ninth and penultimate stage of the women's world surfing circuit, which concluded today in consistent and powerful waves breaking at Culs Nus beach in Hossegor, France.
After being injured for the first half of the year and missing four tournaments, Conlogue played in five and will no longer need the wildcard due to injury, and is now closer to the top five than to being outside the qualifying zone.
Wildcard Macy Callaghan, who was the first surfer at the 2017 QS to not qualify for the CT, surprised everyone by placing second. She couldn't handle the pressure of being in a grand final and didn't show the form she had throughout the event.
As happened at Huntington and as often happens when the CT comes to a beach break, Conlogue waited for the good ones, chose them well and attacked them with power and risk and won by a wide margin, by 14,76 to 10,96.
Carissa Moore, who was the surfer in the best form throughout the tournament, fell to Conlogue's strategy in the semis, in a series that she seemed to have dominated.
Stephanie Gilmore and Lakey Peterson then failed to withstand their own pressure and moved the world title decider to Maui, where the final stage will take place from November 25 to December 6.
The men's event continued after the women's event ended with two semi-finals and a final to go into the water:
S1: Callinan vs Coffin
S2: Wilson vs Medina
Medina, by reaching the semis, took first place in the ranking.
Final result ladies:
1- Courtney Conlogue
2- Macy Callaghan
3- Bronte Macaulay and Carissa Moore
5- Malia Manuel, Johanne Defay, Coco Ho and Tatiana Weston Webb
Top 5 of the ranking after 9 stages
1- Steph Gilmore (AUS) 61175 points
2- Lakey Peterson (USA) 54260
3- Tatiana Weston-Webb (BRA) 44770
4- Carissa Moore (USA) 44235
5- Johanne Defay (FRA) 38895
