Erik Logan: “It’s healthy to assume that as a league we will make refinements”

Will the mid-year cut-off be scrapped? Will the WSL Finals be scrapped? WSL CEO leaves door open for changes: “Once we get through 2023, 2024 is an Olympic year. It will be a good opportunity to evaluate what is working and what is not”

WSL CEO Erik Logan left the door open to changes once 2023 is over, The Sydney Herald reported after interviewing him.

“We want to get through this year before we make any radical changes,” he said. “Once we get through 2023, 2024 is an Olympic year. It will be a good opportunity to evaluate what is working and what is not. And I think it’s healthy to assume that as a league we will make refinements to those (formats).”

The article's journalist, Dan Walsh, interpreted Logan's statement as "WSL signals changes to controversial mid-year cut,"  and that's how he titled his note.

Logan, meanwhile, didn't sound so convinced about that in his statements: “We're always talking to surfers about ways to improve the competitive area… How we think about the format of the finals and also the mid-year cuts.”

It made big news and there was a lot of drama when it broke into Bells and also Margaret River.

The mid-year cut raised interest right in the middle of the season and really achieved more viewers and more engagement.

And then, the second year of the WSL Finals brought about a giant drama with giant consequences, as we saw what Steph Gilmore did to win her eighth world title.

“That’s what the changes we’re making to the sport and the improvements we’re making are all about, and having a smaller field after the mid-year cutoff creates all these other advantages.”
