Fioravanti got into Tokyo 2020
Jordy Smith will not be able to recover from his injury in time and the Italian is the first substitute. "It's one of the most exciting moments of my career," said Leo
Italy's Leo Fioravanti qualified for Tokyo 2020 after South African Jordy Smith did not use his quota due to a knee injury, the Italian himself reported on his Instagram account.
“I am honoured to tell you that I will be competing in the Tokyo Olympics! It is one of the most exciting moments of my career. When I was told in 2016 that surfing would be in the Olympics, I knew I would have a whole nation behind me, believing that I could do it,” said Fioravanti.
“Two weeks ago I didn’t make it to the qualifiers and it was really hard to accept that. But being the first replacement I knew I still had a small chance. I feel so sorry for Jordy Smith, you never want anyone to get injured. You’ll be back soon bro,” he added.
“Today I have been given the chance for which I am grateful. Everything is possible now. Thanks to everyone who has always supported me over the years. It is a very special moment for me and for surfing. Now it is time to do it,” he concluded.
Smith suffered a knee injury surfing on the Australian leg and said he underwent surgery after four tournaments on Kangaroo Island.
Yesterday the ISA confirmed Fioravanti's eligibility and today he entered Tokyo.
