ISA recommends helmet use in Paris 2024

Although they will not be mandatory, “the ISA is promoting their use to ensure well-being and safety,” the statement says.

The International Surfing Association has issued a press release stating that it recommends the use of helmets during the Paris 2024 surfing event taking place in Teahupoo between April 27 and August 5.

However, the use of the mask will not be mandatory, the statement said, and it will be up to each athlete to decide whether to wear it or not.

“The recommendation comes after consultation with the ISA Medical and Athletes Commissions. Teahupo'o, Tahiti, is a reef that creates unique conditions for surfing. Waves from the Pacific Ocean push directly onto the shallow reef, creating strong barrel waves,” the statement said.

“Helmets offer significant protection against injury, reducing risk,” he adds.

“The incredible waves at Teahupo’o are one of the great wonders of the world. We are so excited to introduce this incredible venue to billions of people around the world through the Olympic Games. The health and safety of athletes is our top priority and as an organisation we strongly recommend that surfers wear protective helmets,” said ISA President Fernando Aguerre.
