Jessé Mendes now represents Italy
A new chapter of nationality change brought by Olympic surfing
The Italian flag next to Jesse Mendes' name at WSL events caught the attention of more than one person. Some thought it was a mistake by the organization, but no.
Brazilian website Waves confirmed today that the athlete will be representing Italy for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The athlete has not commented on the matter.
With this, there are now two Italians with Olympic chances today: Leo Fioravanti and the former Brazilian now Italian, Jessé Mendes.
Mendes was part of the elite of world surfing and now competes in challengers.
Olympic surfing brought several changes of flag; Kanoa Igarashi moved to Japan, Tatiana Weston from the United States to Brazil, Brisa Hennessy to Costa Rica and there is a long etcetera.
