John John Florence has left JBay and “probably” the rest of the season
He has fractured his ligament and will undergo surgery. This would definitely keep him out of surfing's debut at the Olympic Games and would put Kelly Slater one step ahead.
Ranking leader and two-time world champion John John Florence confirmed on Instagram that he will not be competing in Stage 6 of the CT in Jeffresy Bay, South Africa and will “probably” miss the rest of the season.
Florence explained that she fractured her anterior cruciate ligament and will undergo surgery to repair it so that she can “be 100% next year.”
This jeopardizes his title campaign, which had him in first place, and his hopes of making it to surfing's debut at the Olympic Games.
“I am excited for this new adventure and everything I will learn along the way. Thank you for all the support!” the champion concludes in his message.
The WSL has not announced who will replace Florence.
The Hawaiian's knee problem benefits Kelly Slater's Olympic hopes, who, at least at the moment, is now qualifying for Tokyo 2020.
The Hawaiian felt pain while leaving a wave at the Oi Rio Pro 10 days ago. He got out of the water and left a series he was winning with 10 minutes left on the clock. Then he left and didn't say anything else until a few hours ago when he posted the aforementioned message.
