Johnny Boy Gomes: “You’ve got to be kidding me, cancel today!”

“What the hell happened to professional surfing today?! It’s a circus run by clowns,” said the former Pipe Master; for his part, Slater defended the WSL’s decision.

Former Pipe Master and legendary Hawaiian power surfer Johnny Boy Gomes criticised the WSL's decision not to go ahead with the event on Monday, with Pipe breaking big and out of control at times but delivering some of the best moments of the season.

“You have to be kidding me, cancel it today! What the hell happened to professional surfing today?! It’s a circus run by clowns,” JBG wrote on the WSL wall.

One of the best waves of the day was surfed by Italo Ferreira on his 7'2, who commented: “Tough conditions here but I surfed mine in the middle of the madness.”

In the same post, Slater appeared on the night to defend the WSL’s stance: “It’s interesting to read comments from people around the world who weren’t on the beach today and aren’t familiar faces in the Pipe lineup to understand what’s potentially good and what’s terrible. Pipe was super out of control and was getting close to a shallow sandbar where the channel is until about three o’clock. I love Pipe and didn’t get interested in it until after contest time. Even then it was very rough. Late tonight a guy drowned and was thankfully resuscitated, but that just goes to show how tough and dangerous it was out there. The competitors who surfed this morning said they didn’t want to race.”

Surfline had announced the best day of the waiting period as yesterday, Monday 5th February, but a mix of swells caused the sea to be out of control.

The Pipe Pro continues its waiting period until February 10. According to event commissioner Travis Logie, today, Tuesday, and tomorrow, Wednesday, look good, as do the last two days of the waiting period.
