South African Jordy Smith injured his ribs while surfing and withdrew from the Hawaiian Pro in order to rest so he can compete in either the QS 10.000 at Sunset or the Pipe Masters.
“It wasn’t that bad, I just landed weird and woke up a little sore so I decided to pull out of Haleiwa. It’s a goal of mine to win the Triple Crown but my focus this year is Pipeline,” he wrote on Instagram after thanking his fans for their messages.
“Now I’m going to let my ribs heal and see how I feel for Sunset,” he said.
Smith is third in the rankings with a real chance of being world champion. If he wins the event and Italo Ferreira places third or worse, he will take the title.
