Kala Grace: “Pipeline is the most addictive drug in the world”
“We know the consequences and we keep coming back,” adds the Hawaiian in a special video about the queen of the waves. “It is the most dangerous wave in the world,” says Mark Healey
A neat mini-documentary about Pipe has just been released and in it several of the wave's top players make powerful statements about the spot.
Kala Grace says: “Pipeline is the most addictive drug in the world (…) We know its consequences and we keep coming back,” adds the Hawaiian, as if he were talking about the purest amphetamine.
Mark Healey, possibly the heaviest waterman on the planet, adds: “It’s the most dangerous wave in the world.”
And lifeguard Dave Wassel and Nathan Florence agree: “Of the people who surf Pipeline, there are those who have hit the reef or those who are about to hit it, and that’s everyone,” says Wassel. “And the more you surf it, the more cat lives you lose with each wipeout and you’re going to get hit, everyone is going to get hit badly at Pipe at some point,” says Florence.
“There have been 100% more injuries than ever this season, in a single season,” Florence said of the 2023-2024 season that saw a dozen surfers fading and nearly dying on the wave.
