Breathing, being present, being in the moment, not looking ahead, taking it “set by set” are some of the elements that surfers have adopted as keys to their competition.

Last year after winning at Pipe, Slater mentioned several times how key breathing was to winning.

Jack Robinson took note and did the same, especially before each series. As DUKE could see, the Australian would sit on the sand and practice Kapalabhati (as seen in the video).

“Kapalabhati (Sanskrit: कपालभाति, AITS: kapālabhāti, meaning "cranial illumination" or "illuminated skull"), known in the West as breath of fire, is a preparatory breathing technique used in yoga for the purification of the body, belonging to the six or eight shatkarmas. Intended to clear the sinuses and oxygenate the lungs before yogic breathing, the kapalabhati technique consists of several short but powerful exhalations, carried out with controlled muscular force after natural inhalations. According to the Gheranda Samhita, it also has spiritual effects on the body,” details Wikipedia.
