Kelly Slater doesn't know if she will go to the 2019 World Surfing Games

And with this, she casts doubt on her participation in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. “I don’t know how I feel about the Olympics now anyway,” she declared.

11-time world champion Kelly Slater told NBC Sports that he doesn't know if he will compete at this year's World Surfing Games and is therefore doubtful whether he will qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“I’m not sure I want to go to Japan and compete right now,” Kelly said after finishing ninth at the Jeffreys Bay tournament, the network reported two days ago.

According to the qualification criteria, the three surfers per country who on June 9 (after the Margaret River CT) were highest ranked in the CT (two in the qualification zone and one as a reserve) are required to participate in the ISA World Championships this year and next as a requirement to participate in the Olympic Games.

With John John Florence out through injury, Slater was given the next spot in the rankings and is now hesitating: “It seems I have to make a decision soon. I have to take into account all the factors to decide in the next few weeks.”

“I don’t know how I feel about the Olympics now anyway. The point is that I’m not focusing on that right now, I’m trying to get back into the swing of things on tour,” she added.

If she qualifies for Tokyo 2020, she will be 48 years old and become the oldest American athlete to be a rookie at the Summer Olympics in recent years if equestrian, sailing and shooting are not counted, surpassing tennis player Martina Navratilova.

“Right now the focus is more on the tour than the Olympics, but we’ll see. I started this year with a lot of pressure to try to get into the Olympics and I think maybe I’ll retire there and that will be the end for me. I put so much pressure on myself at the beginning of the year that I didn’t feel like I could compete freely. I put so many things on my mind. I needed to put that on the back burner and not worry about it. I’m not thinking about it too much,” she said.
