Ken “Skindog” Collins hung up his gloves

“That’s it, it’s over, I’m hanging up my Mavericks guns and I’m never going to surf it again,” he wrote.

Legendary big wave surfer, Mavericks local and former Best Wave of the Year champion Ken “Skindog” Collins has decided to hang up his gloves and never again surf the wave that basically made his career and put him in magazines and movies around the world.

Collins wrote on social media: “Monday was one of the best days I’ve ever been at Mavz. Thankful. Zach Wormhoudt called it a collector’s edition day at Mavz. With all the bells and whistles. And that’s how I want to remember it for the rest of my life, as my last day surfing at Mavericks.”

He added: “That’s it, it’s over, I’m hanging up my guns at Mavericks and I’m never going to surf it again. I don’t want my last day to be with an injury, or because I feel too old or I’m too bitter with the crowd. It’s because I’m 50 years old (old as fuck) and it’s just the right time. The day was perfect, the vibe was perfect, and my time to go out… It was perfect. Don’t worry, you’ll see me on a boat or on a ski, drinking a Modelo, or watching the best show on the planet screaming from the sidelines and cheering the players on in this epic game.”

“I’ve been chasing monsters for 30 years and now it’s time to start chasing other dreams, like the epic days in Tahoe with my family. Cheers and thanks to everyone who made big wave surfing so much fun,” he said.

12/18/18 Monday was one of the best days I have ever been out at Mavz. Grateful. @small_wave was calling it a Collectors Edition Mavz Dayz. With all the special features n shit. And that's how I want to remember my last day surfing Mavericks for the rest of my life. So that's it, that's a wrap, I'm hanging up my Mavz Gunz and never going to paddle out again. I don't want my last day to be an injury, because I feel too old, or I am bitter at the crowds. It's because I am 50 years old (old af) and the timing is perfect. The day was perfect, the vibe was perfect, and my time to kick out.....perfect. Don't worry and all will see me on a boat or ski smashing a Modelo, watching the Best Show On Earth screaming from the side lines, cheering all the players in this epic game. I have been Chasing Monsters for over 30 years and now it's time to start chasing other dreams, like epic powder days in Tahoe with my family. ? Cheers? thanks to everyone who has made big wave surfing so fun, you know who you are! ??special thanks to Matt and Mark Becker for making that session so special with boat ride out ?? #goodtimes #boysupdate #gerrylopezstyle #grateful
