Lele Usuna: “China continues to surprise me”

The Argentinian found a secret right-hand break that breaks “two or three times a year.” “There’s so much left to explore in the world, how great it is to be a surfer!” he reflected.

Images of Lele Usuna surfing a perfect right-hand barrel, tube after tube, gave the impression that the Argentine was on vacation in Indonesia, but the message clearly warned that it was China where he is working as a coach for the Hainan surfers.

The same place where he was surprised by the waves in 2012 while competing in an ISA event held there, somewhere along the way, these unstoppable tubes break.

“This was last week, it was the giant typhoon that hit the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan… Enormous, and because it was so big it entered the South China Sea. It’s not very common for that wave to break, it’s quite rare. It needs a lot of swell, a specific direction, a long period, it happens two or three times a year,” Lele said.

He continued: “But it’s truly insane that both times I’ve been to China, that time in 2012 when we surfed Riyue Bay—incredible, the left-hand point break behind Riyue was amazing, tubular. And now surfing this right-hander, like I said in the post, China continues to surprise me. It’s truly crazy how many good waves there are, many secret ones, and I always come back to the same thing: There’s so much left to explore in the world, how great it is to be a surfer!”
