Tomorrow on DUKE, one of the best Uruguayan surfers in history, Luisma Iturria, launches his new video. DUKE spoke with him about it and as a preview of the premiere.
With camera work by Daniel Monfort and editing by Iturria himself, the video shows the fall to spring of 2018 in Uruguay. As usual for the Punta del Este player, there are plenty of tubes, curves, attacks and some aerials, always with the characteristic fluid style.
How would you describe your new video?
It is a collection of images that we filmed on some days of good waves at home.
Shows?
Surf, curves, tubes, short waves, drops, landscapes. Show my surfing at home on nice days, with good wind.
Of all the waves you can see, what was the best day? Where and how was it?
It was the one at the beginning where I got two left tubes and some nice sized and long rights where I managed some good turns. That day I surfed alone, people passed by in cars full of boards, and they looked at the waves and continued to another beach.
There were a lot of waves everywhere at the mouth of La Barra that day, but they were coming out with tremendous waves. I paddled 7 kilometers that day, which I monitored with my GPS watch. It seems that the surfers didn't want to paddle that day.
I had a great time, and you can see the fruits of taking a risk one day, where you leave everything on the court.
At what stage of your career as a professional surfer would you say you are?
I am in the stage of moving forward, competing, traveling and making videos and photos. I am also growing as a coach for adults and children.
It is surprising that you cannot find the results in the Uruguayan circuit, what explanation do you give for this?
The level is high and small mistakes can take you out of the competition. In both stages I lost because I couldn't find a second wave. The connection with the sea is vital for the competitions and in this last stage of the USU I didn't have it.
But it doesn't worry me, I know my surfing is there because that afternoon after losing my series I went surfing and I managed to get tremendous waves and maneuvers.
Does a bad start motivate you or discourage you? Why?
For three years I have had a bad start to the circuit and reaching the last stage I arrive with chances of becoming Uruguayan national champion, The truth is that it doesn't motivate me, I would like to be better in the ranking, but I'm going to improve that.
Who do you see detonating?
Sebastian Olarte and Lucas Madrid are the two strongest today, but there are six more surfers who are very good and can overtake you with a wave.
How is life as a coach, which is somewhat intermittent? Are you going to go all in?
It's going well, I like it, it's good to see how the kids grow and evolve with my advice and knowledge. I want to get more involved, I'm a fan of good surfing and I like that people can continue learning in each surfing session.
Which youngster do you think has the potential to be the next Luisma or Marco?
Unfortunately I don't see any of them as you ask, but there are kids who want to grow, improve, learn and compete, Martin Ottado is one of the best surfers I see.
What plans and goals do you have for the rest of the year?
Continuing to grow as a coach, some surfing getaways may appear, and some surprises too (laughs).
