Natxo González on his wave: "Sharing it with my best friends made the trip of my life"

Interview with the man of the moment. "A lot of people made my life impossible with this beautiful wave," he says.

It is easy to guess that the young Basque Natxo González is living the best moment of his career. Not only has he met his expectations as a competitor, guaranteeing his place in the CT of the world big wave tour, but also, on the free surfing side, he has positioned himself as a discovery guru, making surfers and fans from all over the world dream, search and suggest where their gem could be found.

“Natxo’s wave”, a powerful, long, flat right that breaks with eight solid feet but just a few metres from the sand, has gone around the world, easily having a million views if we consider the two editions and the posts on social networks. It has generated comments from the most famous surfers, Kelly himself gave his sour opinion on the last trip.

The same day Natxo presented his clip of his return to his wave, Fanning did the same; two days after the presentation of the videos, Spain won by a landslide against Australia in the match for the discovery of right-wingers. The Basque player's is precisely Fanning's wave on amphetamines.

It's hard not to go crazy looking at these photos, although if Natxo himself says it's very dangerous, be careful. "You have to have a lot of balls to catch waves there," says the Basque. All photos by Jon Aspuru
Aritz broke a board, Natxo broke nine boards, but they returned home happy as ever.

After you came back the first time, did your friends make life difficult for you because you had that whole place to yourself?
Yes, when I got back from my first trip there and posted the pictures… Well, the truth is that I told my best friends, and before leaving I told them where I was going, so they already knew a bit about where the subject was coming from… But yes, Many people made my life impossible with this beautiful wave..

It was certainly not an easy decision to share. Could you tell us how you experienced it?
I really don't want to share with everyone where the wave is because of the experience I had. I've been to Namibia, which I think is the best wave in the world, and well, in the end you know where you're going, you know what the trip is like, and you know what everything is like... What made this trip so much more incredible was the uncertainty and the adventure and the path to that adventure; not knowing if there will be a good wave and having to give everything to get there on time.

That's why I wasn't going to share it and that in the end what matters is the journey, the journey to the people you have to meet and the uncertainty of getting there. That's what adventure really is.

Did you read Kelly's comment saying "and there goes the wave," as if to imply that the secret could no longer hold? What do you think?
Yes, Kelly has said something, but well, yes, that can happen. If you end up putting it on the internet and people talk about it, it can happen. But it doesn't matter, in the end it's a wave that is very long, We have to share, and I think that in the next swell there will be more of us, but hey, that's not what it's for, right? So that we're all there together and when there are good waves we can catch them.

At the beginning there are a couple of very, very funny scenes, where Aritz, the veteran legend, looks at you with a face that he wants to kill you because the swell has not yet arrived and there are no waves,  account of those moments.
Yes, that's right at the beginning, when we got there there were no waves and during the day the swell started to increase... My friends told me that the first day when the first waves start to arrive they are unsurfable, because they go over the sand and it is very dangerous.

My friends told me I was crazy, why did I bring them there, that it's crazy, that it's unsurfable and well, in the end we were able to surf something.

How many broken boards and how many injuries were there?
I hit my back pretty hard and touched my neck a little, but nothing serious, and I broke nine boards. I think Pukas must be a little freaked out, but I think they must have been happy with the video (laughs).

Your wave has caused a lot of buzz and some criticism, there were those (a few) who said it wasn't that great, what do you say about having so many big, perfect waves up there? How special is your wave?
My wave, the wave we found, I think it's very dangerous and you have to put a lot of effort into surfing it. In the end, 70% of the waves are accessible and it's already very fast and in the end it's not a perfect wave. It's a tough wave that you have to put a lot of effort into and thank my friends, that's why we chose those waves. If I had been alone I wouldn't have caught even half of the waves.

I think it is a very special place, I have a lot of affection for that place since it has been the adventure of my life and in the end I can Sharing it with my best friends made the trip of a lifetime. Now that I'm saying this, my hair stands on end.

"We have to share, and I think that in the next swell there will be more of us, but well, isn't that what it's for? So that we're all there together and when there are good waves we can catch them," says the Basque who is not jealous that his discovery has become a beach resort.
For those who are worried that the world is running out of waves due to overpopulation, just look at the photo and be reassured.
