Another final in Lowers? No please!
The WSL breaks its word and chooses to crown acrobat champions for the third consecutive year, ignoring the importance of tube riding in heavy waves in surfing
The reasons for the WSL finals being held at Lowers for a third consecutive year were not disclosed in the statement sent by the organisation, but it is a truly difficult decision to understand. So much so that it is difficult to imagine that the schedule will be maintained as it is.
It's hard to believe that surfers themselves would agree that this could happen again.
Are we once again going to define the world champions by pure acrobatics on a wave without consequences?
By definition, the finals would change location from year to year. This year it was not like that and Lowers was at times quite boring, repetitive... Toledo was the same as in 2021 with fewer aerials and without Medina.
Why continue with this formula? How is it that in a sport in which the tubes are a huge part of it, a champion is not defined by these conditions?
With the funding the WSL says it has, how can this not be honoured?
On the other hand, we return to the Surf Ranch, another repetitive and boring stage, that instead of G-Land.
I applaud the fact that El Salvador is still on the tour, that Latin America thus has two of 10 stages.
Of course I also applaud the fact that there is a solid tour with 10 well-done stages that has managed to maintain itself post-pandemic.
I don't like the WSL finals and I'm not convinced by the mid-year cutoff.
And on the other hand, I think the whole year favours right-handers; the first half of the year should have a better balance of rights and lefts (there are three right-hand stages, one on a beach break and one on a spot for both sides) and the second half too (two definitive rights, the pool with lefts and rights, Rio which is a bit of everything and Teahupoo is the only left-hand only wave on the tour).
