Paris 2024 may hold its surfing test at Teahupoo

The organization of the Olympic Games does not rule out any location within French territory, such as Reunion Island or the Caribbean colonies.

The venue for the surfing event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games could very well be French Polynesia, Reunion Island or one of the country's Caribbean colonies, ISA President Fernando Aguerre said yesterday in a note published by the AP news agency based on what was established by the organizing committee.

“There are many options. Many of them look very, very positive,” Aguerre said.

Based on this, the president of Tahiti, Edouard Fitch, proposed that the surfing event be held on his land, reported several media. He, together with his vice president Teva Rohfritsch, met on June 18 with the president of the organizing committee, Tony Estanguet, and told him that Teahupoo is ready to welcome the best.

Three candidate locations had already been put forward (Biarritz with Hossegor, Lacanau and La Torche), the organisation will receive proposals and choose one at the end of the year and all will be taken into account.

Since the Olympics take place in the summer in the northern hemisphere, being able to use a venue like Tahiti would ensure a better chance of having good waves.

This is not the first time that a sailing event has been held far from the host city. The event in Beijing 2008 was held in Hong Kong, for example.
