Rain of qualifiers for Lima 2019
A crucial day brought surfers from Brazil, Peru, Costa Rica, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Chile, Uruguay, El Salvador, Colombia, Mexico, Ecuador and Canada into the second largest multi-sport tournament in the world
The Longboard and SUP Surf divisions guaranteed a good part of the competitors who will be in Lima 2019 after a key day that took place today in Punta Rocas, on the fourth day of the Pan American Surfing Championship.
Considering that in both divisions the best seven in the tournament qualify (with a maximum of one per country), the following qualifiers can be determined, category by category:
Longboard men:
Surfiel Gil from Argentina, Julián Schweizer from Uruguay, Anthony Flores from Costa Rica, Robert Ferrer from Puerto Rico, Rafael Cortez from Chile and Isidro Villao were all but guaranteed places in Lima 2019, with one exception that is not minor.
The same goes for Phil Rajzman or Wenderson Biludo from Brazil and Piccolo Clemente or Lucas Garrido Lecca from Peru.
The exception refers to the fact that the maximum number of qualifiers per country is one and that the 2019 ISA Longboard World Championship has a higher hierarchy than the Pan American Championship, therefore, the best Pan American athlete in that tournament will qualify and could, if he is from the same country as those mentioned, leave out his compatriot.
Similarly, if one of the above-mentioned surfers obtains the ISA classification, it will leave a spot available for the next athlete, René Gough of the Dominican Republic.
This is the detail:
The Peruvian quota will be occupied by:
Piccolo Clemente (PER) or Lucas Garrido Leca (PER)
Fighting for Brazil: Phil Rajzman (BRA) and Wenderson Biludo (BRA)
They are in the top 7 of eligible:
2-Julian Schweizer (URU)
3-Surfiel Gil (ARG)
4-Anthony Flores (CRI)
5-Robert Ferrer (PUR)
6-Rafael Cortez (CHI)
7-Isidro Villao (ECU)
SUP Surf Ladies
The six best in the division were defined and the peculiarity is that four of them are from Peru and Brazil, therefore it is known that one Peruvian and one Brazilian will be in Lima 2019, it is not known if it is Vania Torres (PER) or Brisa Malaga (PER), Aline Adisaka (BRA) or Nicole Pacelli (BRA).
This occupies the Peruvian spot and one of the seven individual spots. Then, the following qualified:
2-Josselin Alabi (ESA)
3-Izzy Gomez (COL)
4-Lucia Cosoletto (ARG)
5-Nimsay Garcia (PUR)
6-Michelle Soriano (ECU)
This group is joined by the American Candice Appleby who has already qualified through the ISA World Championships that just took place in China.
Ladies longboard
Something similar happened, two Peruvians and two Brazilians qualified. So either María Fernanda Reyes (PER) or Ana Camila Kaspar (PER) will take the place of the local team and Atalanta Batista (BRA) or Chloe Calmon (BRA) will take a place from their country.
Then, they guaranteed:
2- Hennessy Breeze (CRI)
3- Maria Teresa Gil (ARG)
4- Mathea Olin (CAN)
5- Tiare Thompson (USA)
6- Ana Cecilia Gonzalez (MEX)
7- Michelle Soriano (ECU)
The first round of the open was also held, minus two heats, and these were the qualifiers:
