Ramón Navarro: “Third place was not enough for him”

The Chilean briefly addressed his fans after the Big Wave Awards. "I will continue doing the sport that I like the most and that has nothing to do with competition," he added.

Chilean Ramón Navarro said in a brief message to his fans on Instagram stories that his third place at the WSL Big Wave Awards left him “wanting a bit of a taste” after the awards that gave first place to Twiggy Baker and second place to Natxo González ran out.

“I will continue doing the sport that I like the most and that has nothing to do with competition. Surfing is a beautiful thing, we call for taking care of the beaches and for me and Kohl that wave was a perfect tube and we won anyway. Thanks kids for the support!” concluded the Chilean.

With third place Navarro and his tow partner, Kohl Christiensen of Hawaii, won $10.000.

Navarro had been in a very similar situation at the Big Wave Awards in 2010, when his memorable wave at Eddie 2009 (which won wave of the year) lost to one that Twiggy Baker had surfed at Mavericks.

This year's awards came amid a major controversy over what should happen to tow-in waves. Several waves have previously won in this modality, but this was not the case (first and second were taken by paddle-in waves).
