Slater will not compete in the Teahupoo CT
He says his foot is still bothering him; Mikey Wright was assigned as a substitute
The greatest surfer in history, Kelly Slater, will not participate in the Tahiti Pro Teahupoo, the seventh stage of the CT because his foot continues to cause him discomfort, the WSL announced in a statement published on its website.
In his place will once again be Mikey Wright, who, having participated only as a wildcard this year, is in ninth position, guaranteeing qualification for the CT thanks to the invitations.
Slater broke his foot surfing at Jeffreys Bay last year, underwent two surgeries and was doing well, he said. He competed at JBay where, although he lost in round 2, he surfed very well.
In an interview with the WSL she said that she was going to start getting ready to make next year the last of her career and that she was going to go to Teahupoo for sure because basically all she had to do was stand up and intubate.
It was striking this time that nothing was announced on social media as it usually does and that the WSL did it officially.
The remaining questions now are the definition of the injury wildcards for next year, since John John, Slater and Caio Ibelli are all out of the water and have not been able to add enough points to stay in the elite and all three will ask for this wildcard. It is a huge unknown what the WSL will do with this issue.
This is how the series looked after the changes and trials that took place yesterday:
