A pleasant chat with the only world champion from Latin America, a living legend of surfing


The first Latin world champion of a CT, ASP or WSL world circuit was Sofía Mulanovich in 2004, long before Gabriel Medina and Adriano de Souza. There are few promising players who manage to confirm their status with something like a world title.

The Peruvian not only won the title, but also finished second twice, third twice and remained in the top 5 for seven years. The last runner-up finish was against none other than Steph Gilmore...
