WSL justifies itself: “Trestles has been a fair playing field for surfers”

Head of Sport Jessi Miley-Dyer explained why Lowers was chosen again and what happened to JBay; Slater believes it makes more sense for the finals to be in Fiji

WSL Head of Sport Jessi Miley-Dyer said Lower Trestles was chosen again as the venue for the tour finals because she believes “it has been a fair playing field for surfers.”

“I think it’s very important that the wave is a peak. It’s also very consistent in terms of swells. Being able to give competitors a chance at a reliable competition in a great place is the most important thing for us and that’s why it’s still there,” he added in an interview conducted by Stab.

Regarding whether they will continue to be in Lowers, he said that they put together the calendar based on “showcasing the best surfers.” “I can’t talk beyond the upcoming season because there is so much work within each calendar,” he explained.

In reference to Peter Mel's comments on air about increasing the number of surfers after the mid-year cut, Miey Dyer explained that it is something that is being discussed "but for now it will stay as it is."

Finally, regarding the removal of the JBay stage, it was impossible to set it on a date due to the Olympic Games.

Among other things, he has no idea who the next CEO of the WSL will be.

Regarding Lowers, Kelly Slater commented that it's great that the season ends at Cloudbreak but that there are probably more than one person like him wondering why he didn't go there for the finals.

The WSL released its schedule for the 2024 CT in which it removed the pool and JBay stages and added Fiji. One of the biggest surprises was that for the fourth consecutive year Lowers was maintained as the venue for the finals.
