Tomás López Moreno: Two videos on Lowers and the story of a high-calibre training session
“We had four or five days of swells, high waves, and the truth is that the water was crazy,” says the Argentine.
I had gone to California after Ecuador and from there I went to Mexico and then I came back to California and on that trip I surfed the best waves. We had four or five days of swells, high waves, and the truth is that the water was crazy.
Mick Fanning was in the water, and there were already several QS athletes, there was a certain level in the water, and it was during those days that Gabriel Medina arrived, and the atmosphere of the finals was already felt in the water.
And it was really crazy because Carissa also fell there, Sally Fitzgibbons fell there and the atmosphere in the water was incredible, it looked very level.
From what I saw, Gabriel always arrived at the same time. For me, he calculated it based on the time in which his series was going to take place, he already had everything planned.
The waves were incredible, Lowers as always perfect right and left, he was with all the pros in the water, it's like a wave would pass and you'd see Mick Fanning go to the wave and everyone would turn around, then Medina would go again and everyone would turn around and the guys would break it and obviously seeing them breaking it you also wanted to do your part and go along and level up and it was incredible. It was a unique experience and with all this about the finals being decided in one day, it was different, it kind of made it more special.
I'm not in favor of that, that the finals are in one day because Gabriel had destroyed everything in a year but already in the water there was a strong vibe. Conner Coffin also arrived and was also destroying it.
In short, California was amazing, high waves, obviously there was always a level in the water so you always want to give it your all. And there, my good friend Bryan, @fakelegphotography, always came to the beach and he motivated me because everyone was breaking it. “Brother, you can break it too, go and show it and do your thing,” and then I came in more motivated than ever. Thanks to him I was able to take that little clip. The other one was passed to me by a man from there who was also filming every day, the truth is that it was the best vibe, I got out of the water and the guy asked me who I was, I told him I was from Argentina and well when you say Argentina in the world of surfing, it draws attention because we don’t have much of a presence but well now having been in the Olympics I think we can make some noise.
Those four days of training were incredible and then, before the finals, he faltered a little bit.
