Weekly Editorial: Guatemala and El Gringo
Two topics worth discussing
Being Uruguayan and not enjoying favorable ports but rather plenty of space for plane departures, it often happens to me that a trip ends or starts at 2 a.m. I have to get to the airport at an unreal hour; that is, I can't sleep or even stay awake.
Turn into a zombie.
More than one airport employee, more than one friend, saw me on this “journey” of traveling at horrible hours that have nothing to do with being awake or asleep.
I'm in that exact situation again. I think these nights are good for work productivity, but at the same time, they leave you feeling devastated because you don't sleep well or work well.
But anyway. There are a couple of things I want to point out on this zombie-themed night:
-I love Guatemala.
I think it has too strong a rootsy feel, people don't realize it and it pains me to even share it, but the locals want their magic to be known... It's still very, very far from places that everyone can't stop saying were rotten by humans.
Guatemala is virgin and the pipes break every day.
-El Gringo is a sacred place that should get more exposure than it does. How in the world are Stab's friends not posting about a QS that has this crazy list of brave people and waves?
It's the best QS in the world!
I think the Americans at Stab are going to end up publishing, belatedly, what's happening out there. They're going to do it.
It's OCTOBER and there are some pipes the size of a house breaking and there are a few, those who had the balls to sign up, 24, who went to compete.
And on top of that, there were youth categories competing in one of the most dangerous waves on the planet.
People don't understand what El Gringo is, and if they did, they'd be paying money to everyday surfers out there.
They deserve it.
I would pay them.
But the good thing is that the championship is happening now, that tomorrow there will be waves and Saturday and Sunday will be bigger.
How come only 24 people signed up? How come only 24 people wanted to surf one of the best tubes in the world with two people in the water!
Is incredible!
