Weekly Editorial: Salvadoran Guarantees

Here, when you think a spot might be working, it most likely is.

I arrived late last Sunday, there was little sun left and I had to make an important decision: Surf the beach break in front of the hotel which looked fun or walk, cross some rocks and paddle towards a relatively difficult right-hand break that I had no idea how it could be working.

In my country, when I'm looking for waves, I usually imagine that a certain spot might be good, for this or that reason, drive for half an hour, arrive, and find that it's not good.

It's true that once in every 10 or 100 times it's good, but the rest is just wishful thinking. A lovely wishful thinking, but it's great when it becomes reality.

I thought that El Salvador, with its waves, offers guarantees, and I preferred to surf a perfect point break rather than a fun beach break.

I made the whole adventurous journey and arrived with a maximum of half an hour of sunlight. But sure enough, there were the right-handers at this relatively difficult-to-access spot.

One after the other, on a short but extremely fun day.

I was all alone, surrounded by a bunch of rocks, while nearby spots were really crowded and I had a blast.

It was a wonderful welcome to this trip to El Salvador.

It turns out that here, when one imagines, or rather it makes sense to one, that a spot might be working, the reality is that most of the time it is, in fact, working.

The return trip, with night already up and against the current, was challenging, but it was worth all the sacrifice and was so far, with one day left on the trip, definitely the best session of the whole.
