Weekly Editorial: Competitive surfing is entirely questionable
On Medina, Houshmand, Pittar, Ewing and the wonderfulness of this sport

Competitive surfing is perfectly questionable.
Just when three-quarters of the people watching Bells' CT were complaining about Ehtan Ewing's score in his series against young George Pittar, he comes along and declares that it was perfectly fine for the world number 2 to beat him.
That the trial was good and that people like to complain and talk for the sake of talking.
On the other hand, a couple of days later, just a few minutes ago, Gabriel Medina called the judging of the stage the worst he's ever seen. After losing to a rookie, Cole Houshmand, who had said at age 11 that he was his favorite surfer.
And, at the end of the day, it is neither Pittar, nor Medina, nor Ewing, nor the people, nor Kelly who own the truth.
The truth in competitive surfing is shared by everyone and shared by no one. And, truly, very emphatically, this is the beauty of surfing “as a sport”.
I have heard that they want to objectify aspects of judging, such as measuring the speed of the surfer, I think that would be a huge mistake.
It's difficult to live through situations where you see that a surfer is, in your opinion, clearly disadvantaged, but at the same time it's part of the beauty of the competitive side of surfing.
It is how it is and you have to enjoy it and suffer it or change the channel.
Simple as that!
