Weekly Editorial: Good feelings from El Paredón
There are places we go to surf that are not only important for surfers, like this one
On the way to El Paredón I was expecting to find a typical Central American Pacific beach with good waves, warm water and heat. After all, that is all we like and care about.
But I was pleasantly surprised to find that El Paredón is much more than just extremely consistent, powerful waves, but also an international tourist center that doesn't necessarily have to do with surfing.
At Cocorí, the hotel where I am staying is full of foreigners, Europeans, Americans and people from all over the world and their daily activity has nothing to do with surfing, maybe a few classes here and there, but that's about it.
They spend their time in the pool, reading a book, relaxing in the heat, eating delicious food and simply enjoying the tranquility of a place like this.
And on the beach and in the area, there are several other places to stay and the routine is the same.
And everyone respects the ritual of watching the sunset, the moment when the beach fills up. In the water all the surfers of the championship are enjoying fun waves and on the sand the scene for hundreds of meters is of friends having a good time with the sun setting and ending another day of heat, peace and tranquility on the shores of the Pacific.
Anything else you want to ask for?
They say that the reason why this place is not just a wave destination and attracts thousands of tourists annually is that it is on the way between Lake Atitlán, Guatemala City and another tourist hub such as Antigua.
Those who travel among volcanoes, ruins, lakes and colonial cities find a paradise at hand like El Paredón, which has already become famous in blogs, travel guides and tips from friends.
Here, besides relaxing, people find a much-desired party with people from all over the world, in front of a beautiful sea and in a pleasant atmosphere.
Accustomed to just waves and beach, I was pleasantly surprised to visit a place that others visit for other reasons. It was something that strangely caught my attention… You usually go to places where you basically share the objective with all the people around you and this was not at all what happened at El Paredón.
And be careful! Everything that matters to us is also guaranteed: Heat, pipes and hot water.
I just want to pass on the message that here and in the rest of the world and in life in general there are places where there are waves and not everything that matters is surfing. Even though all of us care about most of it is the blessed surf.
