Editorial: The Eddie and how it contrasts with competitive surfing today

In this world that ruins the CT and the QS, in which the Triple Crown no longer exists and in which the Pipe Masters is not the same

In this world of surfing that ruins CT, QS, invents challengers, in which the wonderful and prestigious Hawaiian Triple Crown no longer exists and in which the Pipe Masters is no longer what it used to be, the classic invitational championship in memory of the legendary Edward Ryan Makuahanai Aikau, or simply Eddie Aikau, stands in strong contrast.

It seems that there is a consensus in the surfing world about the purity of this event, about the core of this event, about the importance of this event, even, and I'm being romantic, about the spirituality of this event.

These are all aspects that add a lot to what was mentioned in the first paragraph.

Eddie sacrificed his life to save his friends, his companions on the Hōkūleʻa, a ship that intended to repeat the brave journey that the Polynesians made centuries ago, joining Hawaii with Tahiti.

Eddie was the only lifeguard on the North Shore and it was in his veins not only to surf big waves but also to take care of others. And so he died, following what ran through his blood.

Honoring Eddie on a day when “Eddie would go in the water” has become one of the greatest honors in surfing. An honor reserved for very few occasions in history; this event has been held 10 times in 40 years (nine if you consider that the first one did not have the slogan of the sea being gigantic).

This Sunday, Waimea Bay permitting, there will be Eddie and the finest lineage of global surfing tradition will be honored.

And it's beautiful that this happens, it's beautiful that something pure exists in this world of surfing that in some corners wants to promote drama, reality shows and everything else.

Hopefully, some of the invited Spanish speakers (on the list of substitutes) will make it to the main stage and enter the event: Alonso, Manny, Natxo, Merello and Isabella (worthy guests at the event) and achieve what Ramón Navarro already achieved; the only Spanish speaker, if I'm not mistaken, in history to be part of the event.
