Since 1976, the first year of the world surfing circuit, the world champion has been determined by adding up the points achieved by surfers competing in a variety of waves around the world throughout a season.

The dream tour was established as the most powerful form: The most perfect and iconic waves would be the playing fields for the glory of the sport.

Legends were born: Curren, Carroll, Potter, Kelly, Andy… Surfers and non-sportsmen. They transcended sporting excellence and placed competitive surfing and its protagonists in a magical place.

Then came John John and the Brazilian storm came…

But the one who came to screw things up was a monkey with a machine gun named Erik Logan; who, in view of the ratings that the final between Italo and Medina in Pipe had and using the pandemic as an excuse, changed the structure of competitive surfing and invented a final and an end-of-year cut and a three-tier system for qualification.

A guy who knows nothing about surfing and who was kicked out for getting drunk and getting rough with surfers and people around him, I think this is something we are still suffering from and it is worth remembering as many times as possible because this week an incredible 18-year-old girl called Caitlin Simmers would have won her first world title and John John his third.

But this madness persists. Of course, it was never going to be something that would change overnight.
