Editorial: What really matters

What does it matter who won between Filipe and Griffin? What we think is important doesn't really matter at all.

Today I learned that a surfer friend of a friend is in the ICU fighting for his life. A well-liked man who is a great scientist and whose work has helped a lot of people.

I can't do more than dedicate a few words in this classic Friday editorial to reflect on how, from one day to the next, you're called upon to fight the greatest battle of your life. A real one, and not some trivial thing we think is important in our everyday lives.

I can't help but think about how we have to be thankful every day for just waking up and having loved ones around us to share our lives with.

I can't help but feel bad for what's happening to him and hope he gets better and that this is just a scare.

We must learn from people like him who are fighting the real battle right now, and contrast that with what we do every day, worrying about trivialities compared to this.

I usually write editorials on Fridays talking about surfing and I realize that's not important at the moment.

I don't mean to say that all problems aren't problems... We all have our dramas, but when you get news that leaves you speechless, it's when we truly realize that we wasted our time worrying about those things.

And I want to take a second to think about him and send him my best wishes and ask everyone to do the same.

I hope she manages to overcome this illness, that it ends up being a story, and that tomorrow this editorial will be about the waves she rode somewhere with the child she is expecting.
