The WSL changed the rule for double qualifiers through CT and QS and now states that for those surfers who double qualify they will be giving the institution one more wildcard that the institution will use as it sees fit.

Stab magazine reported on the new rule and that a petition was established by challenger surfers to review this rule and return to the previous one, which states that when a surfer qualifies for two circuits, the next one in the ranking in the second division is sought.

According to them, they have already collected 123 signatures and are looking for important surfers to sign as well to put pressure on the WSL.

They also talk about a meeting in France.

The change would give the WSL more authority over the wildcards it awards, which were initially two each year and the event wildcards (three of which have already been awarded to Ezekiel Lau and Tia Blanco for winning a reality show).

The surfers' petition reads: “This letter serves as a formal manifesto from the athletes and professionals working on the Challenger Series tour.

According to the 2021 rulebook, rule 1.09(b)(iv), if a CT surfer takes one or more of the 12 spots in the Challenger Series rankings, the spots automatically become wildcards for the season.

We strongly disagree with this rule 1.09b(iv) and would like the WSL to consider reintroducing the rule for double qualifiers.”

There has been no word from the WSL regarding the petition.
