Comenzó un nuevo circuito mundial de surf, uno que vino con cambios como la transmisión en español, que anuncia cambios más grandes para un circuito que será el último de su tipo (ya que en 2019 no habrá Pipe Masters y el tour concluirá con selecto evento en las Mentawais que definirá el título).

Las olas estuvieron ahí, demoraban pero cada tanto entraba una buena con esa primera sección tubular y luego una larga pared de para maniobras.

Lo que no fue nuevo entre tantos cambios fueron las siempre interesantes sorpresas, como que pierda el actual campeón John John Florence contra el rookie Griffin Colapinto, o que le cobren una interferencia a Gabriel Medina, gracias a una vueltita increíble que le hizo el italiano Leo Fioravanti… Se puede decir que el tano le dio al brasileño un poco de su propia medicina, ya que este es un batallador nato a la hora de remar por el pico.

O que Slater no llegue a su serie. El 11 veces campeón mundial explicó que tuvo que pasar por otra cirugía hace dos semanas y si se hace la ronda 2 mañana, no podrá competir y en su lugar irá Mikey February, si se hace un par de días después sí competirá.

Hubo algunas sorpresas pero la mayoría de las series las ganaron los mejores rankeados: El campeón defensor Owen Wright ganó, el tahitiano Michel Bourez también, así como Jordy Smith, Julian Wilson, Italo Ferreira, Kolohe Andino, Filipe Toledo y Mick Fanning.

Entre las damas la nota la dio la invitada, Macy Callaghan, que le ganó a Steph Gilmore. Sally, Carissa y Tyler avanzaron en primer lugar.

This was heartwarming to receive...Thank you to everyone supporting me on the Gold Coast all these years and wondering where I am right now as my heat begins at the #quikprogoldcoast2018. If round 2 men’s does not run tomorrow, I will most likely make it to surf my heat. If it runs tomorrow, @mikeyfebruary will take my spot and best of luck to him. I had surgery 3-1/2 weeks ago and am not quite out of the woodwork yet. I was looking forward to having what could be our final heat together with @mfanno but I’ve only surfed 4 times since my latest surgery while getting work on the foot and letting it heal. If I do show, I’m not expecting my best performance but with some wave luck and tubes, I’ll have some fun. Thanks to the @wsl for keeping me in the draw (as per the rules, of course).
